Background information and basis for the calculations
Based on established data sources, the CO₂Kompass calculates the greenhouse gas emissions that may result from selected journeys. The carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) value accounts for carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, such as methane, and measures the climate impact of those emissions. The calculation covers emissions from vehicle operation and energy provision; emissions associated with the manufacture, maintenance, and disposal of vehicles and infrastructure are not included.Car: average occupancy (1.4 people); emission factors for an average passenger car are calculated by averaging across powertrain types (including electric cars) and vehicle size classes
Train/Public Transport: average occupancy; operator-specific electricity mix. Electrically powered DB Fernverkehr trains run on 100% renewable electricity in Germany. Non-electrified journeys account for less than 2%.*
Airplane: average occupancy; includes travel to and from the airport and aircraft taxiing. Specific departure and arrival times are not taken into account when calculating the flight route.
Data reference period: 2023–2024.
*bahn.business customers travel on electrically powered DB regional and long-distance trains in Germany using 100% renewable electricity. Their indirect emissions and diesel-related emissions from regional rail services are offset.
